England exited the Women’s T20 World Cup after a lackluster group stage performance against the West Indies in Dubai. Joseph, who scored a vital 52 runs off 38 balls was first dropped on six then again on 31 and 35, while captain Hayley Matthews contributed a half-century in a formidable opening partnership of 102 runs.

England’s struggles mirrored their semi-final loss to South Africa in the previous tournament. Despite posting a competitive total of 141-7, thanks to Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 57 runs, England struggled in the field. The absence of captain Heather Knight, who retired hurt with a calf injury significantly impacted the team’s performance. This match marked West Indies’ first T20 victory over England since 2018.

Additionally, it ended England’s streak of advancing past the group stage which had lasted since 2010. England began the match confidently having won three previous games but the pressure of a must-win situation led to a sluggish powerplay and early wickets. A key turning point came when Knight sustained her injury while attempting a single, leaving Sciver-Brunt to hold the innings together alone.

While England failed to cope with the West Indies’ aggressive play, credit is due to West Indies for applying pressure effectively. West Indies’ performance was commendable especially considering the absence of veteran batter Stafanie Taylor. Joseph and Matthews took full advantage of England’s mistakes with Matthews crafting a classy innings to help secure the win.
