England made a strong statement in their T20 World Cup defense with an impressive performance against West Indies, according to former bowler Steven Finn. After a shaky start in the group stage, including a critical rain-affected match against Scotland and a loss to Australia, England bounced back with their best showing of the tournament. Finn noted that this performance mirrored their victorious form from 2022.
“England showcased the brand of cricket everyone has come to admire,” Finn told BBC Test Match Special. Their bowlers limited West Indies to 180-4 on a batting-friendly pitch. Opener Phil Salt’s unbeaten 87 and Jonny Bairstow’s 48 not out secured a comfortable victory with 15 balls to spare, positioning them well in a group also featuring South Africa and the USA.
“This was England’s opportunity to assert themselves in the tournament,” Finn remarked. “With the exception of a few overs, it was almost flawless.” He praised their powerful batting and skillful bowling, highlighting Salt’s standout innings. Reflecting on the win, Salt acknowledged the importance of such a performance after a challenging group stage. “In tournament cricket, confidence and momentum are crucial,” the 27-year-old said. “If we continue to build on this game-by-game, we’ll be in a strong position.”
Salt also lauded England’s bowlers, including Jofra Archer, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, each contributing crucial wickets. He particularly praised Rashid’s effectiveness, emphasizing his daunting challenge for opposition batters. “With players like Rash, who consistently deliver, our bowling attack is formidable,” Salt added. “He’s tough to face in the nets, let alone in a match.”
England faces South Africa next, aiming to maintain their momentum in the tournament.
