England Takes Control on Day 3 at Old Trafford

England is closing in on victory over Sri Lanka after a dramatic third day of the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford. Sri Lanka ended the day on 204-6 in their second innings, just 82 runs ahead with England’s Jamie Smith completing his maiden Test century earlier in the day. Sri Lanka struggled when captain Dhananjaya de Silva fell to Matthew Potts and with Dinesh Chandimal temporarily sidelined due to a thumb injury, the tourists found themselves effectively 95-5 still 27 runs behind.

However, Angelo Mathews showed resilience, scoring 65 in a crucial partnership of 78 with Kamindu Mendis, who remains unbeaten on 56. England’s fortunes changed when they persuaded the umpires to replace the ball, leading to a more effective swing. Chris Woakes then dismissed Mathews and Joe Root quickly removed Milan Rathnayake. Despite these breakthroughs, England remains wary of the rain forecasted for the weekend which could impact their chances of securing a win.

Earlier, Smith scored a composed 111, helping England reach 358 in their first innings and secure a lead of 122. Sri Lanka’s early batting faltered with Nishan Madushanka and Kusal Mendis both falling for ducks and Dimuth Karunaratne dismissed after an inside edge. Despite Mathews and Kamindu’s efforts, Sri Lanka’s batting remained fragile.

England’s stand-in captain, Ollie Pope faced tough decisions but the ball change after 41 overs proved pivotal. Woakes exploited the conditions to remove Mathews, even though Root and Gus Atkinson missed earlier chances. Chandimal, who returned after avoiding a fracture continues at the crease alongside Kamindu. Smith’s century, achieved with elegant drives was the highlight for England.
