Gary Kirsten has stepped down as Pakistan’s limited-overs coach after just six months in the position. His departure comes ahead of the team’s white-ball tour of Australia set to begin next week. Test coach Jason Gillespie will take over coaching responsibilities for the upcoming series. Kirsten a former South African batter was appointed to a two-year contract in April alongside Gillespie’s appointment as the Test coach.
Reports suggest that Kirsten had a strained relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), particularly regarding selection matters. Gillespie recently stated that he no longer had input on player selections and described his role as a “match day strategist.” The PCB had reorganized its selection committee following a heavy defeat to England in the first Test which likely contributed to the tensions.
Gary Kirsten has an illustrious coaching background, having led India to a World Cup victory in 2011 and previously coaching South Africa. He has also held coaching roles with various T20 franchises including teams in the Indian Premier League. As for the upcoming tour, Pakistan will play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) starting on November 4 in Melbourne followed by three T20 Internationals.
With Kirsten’s exit, Gillespie will aim to guide the team effectively during this critical series especially following Pakistan’s recent 2-1 Test series victory against England. The PCB’s decision to appoint Gillespie for the white-ball matches reflects their confidence in his capabilities as they prepare for the challenges ahead in Australia.
