Harry Brook Tops Test Rankings, Dethrones Joe Root
Harry Brook has surged past England teammate Joe Root to claim the top spot in the ICC Test batting rankings. The 25-year-old achieved this feat following stellar performances during England’s tour of New Zealand. Brook’s remarkable innings of 171 in the first Test was followed by scores of 123 and 55 in the second Test in Wellington, earning him a ranking score of 898. Root, who had held the top position since July after dethroning New Zealand’s Kane Williamson is just one point behind Brook with a score of 897.
The race for the top spot remains tight, with the upcoming third Test in Hamilton on 14 December providing an opportunity for Root to reclaim his title. Brook’s rise has drawn praise from Root, who lauded his Yorkshire teammate as the best batter in the world at present. “Brooky is by far and away the best player in the world at the minute,” Root said. “He can absorb pressure, apply it, and hit you for six whether it’s spin or seam.”
Since making his Test debut in 2022, Harry Brook has amassed 2,280 runs from 38 innings in 23 matches, boasting an exceptional average of 61.62. His consistent ability to dominate bowlers and adapt to different conditions has made him a standout performer in international cricket. The fierce competition between Brook and Root, two of England’s finest batters, highlights the strength of the team’s batting lineup as they prepare for the decisive Test in Hamilton.
