India set several batting records on the fourth day of the rain-affected second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur. Leading the two-match series 1-0, the hosts achieved the fastest team milestones for 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 runs in Test history, declaring at 285-9 in just 34.4 overs in response to Bangladesh’s 233 all out. India’s spin bowlers reduced Bangladesh to 26-2 in their second innings.

The tourists still fell 26 runs short heading into the final day. India’s aggressive batting style stood out as they scored their first 50 runs in just three overs, breaking records previously established in one-day and T20 formats. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge scoring the fastest 50 by an Indian opener and finishing with 72 runs off 51 balls. Captain Rohit Sharma made a quick 23 runs off 11 balls, hitting sixes with his first two deliveries.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul made significant contributions, scoring 47 runs off 35 balls and 68 runs off 43 balls, respectively. Meanwhile, Bangladesh found it challenging to control the flow of runs. India’s run rate of 8.22 marked the highest ever for a team scoring over 200 runs, surpassing Australia’s previous record of 241-2 declared against Pakistan in 2017.

Additionally, this declaration came after just 34.4 overs faced which is the earliest for an Indian first-innings declaration, easily outpacing the previous record of 89.4 overs against Bangladesh in Kolkata in 2019. This match marks the first Test series for India since appointing former opener Gautam Gambhir as head coach, and their aggressive performance reflects a shift in strategy under his guidance.
