India Won't Host Women's T20 World Cup If Bangladesh Can't

India will not host the Women’s T20 World Cup in October if Bangladesh cannot, according to Indian cricket board (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah. The tournament is scheduled to take place from October 3 to 20 in Bangladesh, but recent political unrest has caused concerns. Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently resigned and fled to India following weeks of violent anti-government protests.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) monitors the situation in Bangladesh closely. Shah declined the ICC’s inquiry about potentially hosting the event, explaining that India would still experience the monsoon season in October and would host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. He emphasized his reluctance to host back-to-back World Cups to avoid giving that impression.

Furthermore, student-led protests against civil service job quotas sparked the recent unrest in Bangladesh which resulted in over 400 fatalities. In response, the ICC collaborates with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and independent security consultants to assess the safety of the tournament’s current venue. If Bangladesh cannot host the event, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates have emerged as potential alternative hosts.

The Women’s T20 World Cup will feature 10 teams, including England and Scotland, with matches scheduled for Dhaka and Sylhet.
