Ireland Edge Bangladesh in Thrilling T20 Clash

Ireland claimed a 12-run victory over Bangladesh in the first match of their three-game T20 international series in Sylhet, showcasing a strong all-around performance. Opting to bat first, Ireland posted an impressive 169-5 led by a century partnership between Leah Paul and captain Gaby Lewis. Although opener Amy Hunter fell for 10 early on, Lewis scored a brisk 60 off 42 balls including seven fours. Paul stole the show with a career-best unbeaten 79 off just 45 balls, featuring 10 fours and two sixes.

Despite quick dismissals of Orla Prendergast and Laura Delany, Ireland’s total presented a challenging target for Bangladesh. The hosts started their reply strongly with Dilara Akter Dola (49) and Sobhana Mostary (46) putting on a century stand. However, Ireland turned the tide as Prendergast broke the partnership by dismissing Mostary. Arlene Kelly then struck twice in the same over, removing captain Nigar Sultana Joty and Dola while Aimee Maguire contributed with a key stumping of Taj Nehar.

Prendergast delivered a game-changing penultimate over, claiming two wickets in a double-wicket maiden, including the crucial scalp of Shorna Akter. With 18 runs needed off the final over, Bangladesh managed only five as Ireland wrapped up the match with a commanding finish. This victory marked an impressive comeback for Ireland, especially after their young side, averaging under 23 years of age was swept 3-0 in the ODI series earlier this month.

The teams will meet again on Saturday for the second T20 with the final match scheduled for Monday.
