Jacob Bethell impressed with his performances against New Zealand, earning praise from England captain Ben Stokes for proving his potential in international cricket. Batting at number three for the first time in his first-class career, Bethell scored an unbeaten 50 on debut in Christchurch and followed it with 96 in the second Test in Wellington, helping England secure a 323-run victory and clinch the series.

Stokes acknowledged initial skepticism over Bethell’s promotion but emphasized the importance of exposing young talent to high-pressure situations. Bethell narrowly missed becoming England’s youngest Test centurion in 85 years, falling four runs short after edging Tim Southee behind. Despite the disappointment, Bethell displayed maturity responding lightheartedly about his missed milestone which Stokes hailed as “class.”

Bethell’s opportunity arose after Jordan Cox, originally set to replace wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, broke his thumb. Ollie Pope stepped in as keeper and moved to number six, opening the number three spot for Jacob Bethell. His success now gives England flexibility in their lineup with options to keep him at three, move him to open in place of Zak Crawley or retain Pope as keeper.

Stokes dismissed concerns of a selection dilemma, emphasizing Bethell’s talent and backing him as a player regardless of early results. Meanwhile, Harry Brook shone in Wellington with a first-innings 123, earning player of the match honors, though he suffered a minor ankle injury during a football warm-up.

England’s series win marks their first away triumph in two years and their first in New Zealand since 2008. They aim to sweep the series 3-0 in the Hamilton Test. New Zealand captain Tom Latham after heavy defeats in the first two Tests, hopes his team can bounce back in Hamilton where changes to the lineup will depend on conditions.
