Jacob Bethell’s impressive performances in New Zealand have created a selection dilemma for the team, as praised by England head coach Brendon McCullum. Bethell, who stood in for wicketkeeper Jamie Smith during his paternity leave made three half-centuries in his first Test series. He top-scored with 76 in England’s 423-run loss in the third Test in Hamilton, further cementing his reputation. McCullum described the situation as a “good headache,” highlighting the value of having such talent to choose from.

Bethell, who had never batted higher than number four before was moved up to number three due to injuries in the squad and he seized the opportunity. He scored 50 in the first Test win in Christchurch followed by a 96 in Wellington with all three of his scores of 50 or more coming in the second innings. His performances made him only the second England player after Sir Alastair Cook to reach 50 three times in a series before the age of 22.

While England captain Ben Stokes had previously stated that the team would return to its original lineup once Smith is available, McCullum has now suggested Bethell might force a reconsideration of the options, potentially challenging the positions of Ollie Pope or Zak Crawley. Jacob Bethell’s maturity and contribution off the field have also impressed McCullum, who praised the growing talent in the squad.

As England prepares for their next Test against Zimbabwe in May, Stokes reflected positively on the team’s achievements in 2024, despite the heavy defeat in Hamilton. With nine wins and eight losses, England enters 2025 excited for upcoming series against India and Australia.
