Jafer Chohan Joins England Squad for White-Ball Tour

Jafer Chohan has received his first England call-up for the upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies where Jos Buttler will return as captain. The 22-year-old has made a significant impact in T20 Blast cricket, taking 22 wickets in 23 matches for Yorkshire including 17 in just 10 games in 2024. Chohan also stands out as the first player from the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) to join an England squad.

Buttler, who has sidelined himself since August due to a calf injury watched as Harry Brook and Phil Salt led the one-day international and T20 teams in his absence during the recent series against Australia. This tour marks Buttler’s first series as captain after the review of England’s setup followed the T20 World Cup in June which led to head coach Matthew Mott’s departure.

The first ODI against the West Indies is set for October 31 in Antigua followed by five T20 matches. The same squad will compete in both series which includes uncapped players like Chohan, Hampshire fast bowler John Turner and Warwickshire all-rounder Dan Mousley. Two additional players from the England Test squad, finishing their tour in Pakistan will join later.

Jafer Chohan’s call-up caps off an extraordinary two years. After initially playing club cricket in Loughborough, he thought his professional dreams had ended after failing to sign with Middlesex. However, a standout performance during a net session for England’s T20 squad led to his introduction to SACA and a contract with Yorkshire.

Chohan feels excited about the opportunity to learn from top players and sharpen his skills. He believes that his unique skill set can contribute to the England team and he expresses gratitude to SACA for providing him with a second chance in his cricketing career.
