Jamie Smith’s 89 Leads England to Strong Start Against Pakistan

Jamie Smith’s impressive 89 combined with a trio of late wickets put England in a strong position on the first day of the third and deciding Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. England managed to reach 267 all out while Pakistan stumbled to 73-3 in response, giving the tourists a favorable chance for a second consecutive series win in the country. Pakistan’s strategy to prepare a dry pitch for the match initially seemed successful especially as England’s batting faltered after winning the crucial toss.

Ben Duckett was the only batsman to avoid blame for his dismissal, scoring 52 as England collapsed from a solid start of 56-0 to 118-6. Smith’s rescue effort was vital; he formed a crucial partnership of 105 runs with Gus Atkinson, who contributed 39 runs. Jamie Smith’s innings included six sixes but ended in the over before tea as he chased a seventh. The day ended with England in control, having claimed three Pakistani wickets for just nine runs.

England’s decision to bat first allowed them to exploit the best conditions but the pitch quickly became a focal point of the match with spin bowlers dominating throughout. Smith, who struggled in the previous Test, demonstrated resilience by patiently building his innings and accelerating towards the end. Despite England’s struggles, the wicketkeeper’s performance was crucial as he helped England recover from a precarious position.

In reaction to the day’s play, Smith expressed satisfaction with England’s score and the opportunity to capitalize on the pitch conditions with early wickets on the second day. Meanwhile, former England bowler Steven Finn noted the need for England to adapt quicker to the pitch which played differently than expected.
