Jay Shah, the chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has joined the Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) newly formed global advisory board which will replace its former World Cricket Committee. The board emerged from the World Cricket Connects forum at Lord’s in 2024 where 120 key figures in cricket gathered to discuss the sport’s future.

The MCC plans for the board to act as a key symposium for cricket, ensuring the sport’s continued success. Jay Shah, 36, made history in December 2024 by becoming the youngest-ever ICC chairman, succeeding Greg Barclay. Shah, who also served as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is one of cricket’s most influential figures.

The advisory board will be chaired by former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who was the MCC’s president from October 2019 to September 2021. Other prominent members include former international captains Sir Andrew Strauss and Graeme Smith as well as England women’s captain Heather Knight.

MCC chair Mark Nicholas expressed excitement about the board’s composition, calling it an exceptional group of minds in various areas relevant to cricket. He looks forward to their collective impact on the global game. The MCC, based at Lord’s serves as the custodian of the laws and spirit of cricket.

The MCC World Cricket Committee which had been active since 2006 had no formal power but frequently influenced significant cricket decisions including the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS) and the World Test Championship. The new advisory board aims to continue these contributions, further shaping the future of global cricket.
