Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali have faced exclusion as England select five uncapped players for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. The squad for the three-match T20 series includes Jacob Bethell, 20 and Dan Mousley, 23 both Warwickshire batting all-rounders along with Essex’s Jordan Cox, Hampshire’s John Turner and Leicestershire’s Josh Hull. Hull, Bethell and Turner also make the squad for the five ODIs that follow.

Marcus Trescothick will serve as England’s interim coach for the series after Matthew Mott departed in July. Mott left due to England’s disappointing performances in the T20 World Cup semi-finals and their failed defense of the 50-over World Cup title last year. The T20 squad features Jos Buttler (captain), Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley and the new players.

The ODI squad includes Buttler, Archer, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Matthew Potts, Jamie Smith and others with Joe Root resting and Chris Jordan omitted. Bairstow, 34 and Moeen, 37 are notable absentees. England dropped Jonny Bairstow, who received a two-year contract last October from both the Test and white-ball squads. Moeen, who retired from red-ball cricket last summer also faces exclusion from the current selections.

Both players played key roles in England’s 2019 World Cup win and Moeen was part of the 2022 T20 World Cup squad. England also miss injured players Mark Wood and Ben Stokes while Saqib Mahmood returns to the T20 squad after a back injury. The first T20 against Australia will take place on September 11, following the end of the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka.
