Mark Wood Confident Despite England's T20 World Cup Disruption

Mark Wood (bowler) states that despite a disrupted build-up, England are preparing for the T20 World Cup with a “no excuses” mentality. Their four-match series against Pakistan, intended as a warm-up, saw two matches washed out due to rain, leaving only the last match at The Oval on Thursday before their World Cup opener against Scotland on June 4. Wood recognized the significance of match practice, stressing its role in honing England’s performance. He underscored England’s professionalism and adaptability as crucial assets in overcoming challenges and ensuring readiness for upcoming matches.

England’s first T20 match of the year was against Pakistan at Edgbaston which they won by 23 runs while Pakistan has already played 14 T20s in 2024. England’s preparation was further complicated as many players returned early from the Indian Premier League. Mark Wood noted the varying perspectives on this, some players may feel fresh, while others might need more match practice. England faced additional challenges, including coach Matthew Mott’s absence due to a family issue and captain Jos Buttler’s absence for the birth of his child.

However, England isn’t alone in facing disrupted preparation, Australia also encountered difficulties with key staff members taking the field due to IPL commitments. Wood, recovering from a knee issue, hasn’t played since March but aims to return to form in Thursday’s match, his first T20 appearance since April 2023. He feels confident about his readiness to bowl at full pace and is eager to contribute to England’s World Cup campaign.
