Matthew Mott, England’s coach, emphasizes the need for his team to seize the initiative against India in their T20 World Cup semi-final. The defending champions struggled in the group stage, barely advancing on net run-rate after a tough campaign against Scotland. Despite coming second in their Super 8s pool behind South Africa, they now face the unbeaten India in Guyana on Thursday at 15:30 BST.
“We haven’t quite clicked as a complete unit yet,” Mott told the BBC. “Certain aspects have worked at different times, but our ‘A-game’ is certainly capable of matching up with India.”
India has been dominant throughout the tournament, notably defeating Australia by 24 runs to top their Super 8s group. England’s journey has been less straightforward, with losses to Australia and South Africa amid the need for substantial wins against Oman and Namibia to avoid elimination early on.
“At times, we’ve had to grind out results,” Mott acknowledged. “But from here on, it’s about taking the initiative. It’s about making the first move against India and then aiming to maintain that advantage.”
Discussing the lack of a reserve day for their semi-final, Matthew Mott expressed concerns over the weather forecast but played down the pre-determined venue issue for India. He stressed that England was prepared for the challenges ahead and remains focused on the present rather than dwelling on past encounters with India.
“This group’s mantra is staying in the moment,” Mott emphasized. “India is a different team this year, and so are we.”
The match echoes their semi-final clash in the previous T20 World Cup, where England’s comprehensive victory set them on the path to winning the title.
