Paige Scholfield led Oval Invincibles to a commanding 45-run victory over a struggling Birmingham Phoenix in the opening match of The Hundred women’s competition. Scholfield struck 71 from 40 balls, including 12 fours, marking her first half-century in the tournament. She partnered with Alice Capsey to build a crucial 90-run stand for the second wicket with Capsey adding 52. Despite Emily Arlott’s efforts, claiming 2-19, the Phoenix could not keep up with the Invincibles’ total of 150-5.
The Phoenix, who failed to win a single match last year, faced another defeat as they fell short in their chase. They had never successfully chased more than 128 in The Hundred. Their collapse came as key players Suzie Bates, Ellyse Perry and Sophie Devine underperformed, scoring 6, 0, and 13 respectively. Wicketkeeper Amy Jones briefly fought back with 21 runs but the Phoenix succumbed to Amanda-Jade Wellington’s disciplined bowling, who took 3-9, and precise fielding.
The match saw Phoenix receive a five-run penalty for dangerous play when Marizanne Kapp’s throw hit Suzie Bates after Kapp collected the ball off her own bowling. Ellyse Perry ran out for a duck and Phoenix dropped Capsey twice on 32, exposing their fielding issues. Scholfield, who had replaced Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu as an opener, played a crucial role in securing the win.
Player of the match Paige Scholfield admitted feeling nervous initially but praised her ability to adapt to the pitch and trust her shots. Phoenix captain Ellyse Perry acknowledged the difficulties they faced, highlighting their fielding and batting flaws. On Wednesday, Southern Brave will face London Spirit in another women’s and men’s double header at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.
