Pakistan clinched a historic series win over Australia, securing their first one-day series victory in Australia in 22 years with a dominant eight-wicket triumph in Perth. Fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah led the way with Shaheen taking 3-32 and Naseem 3-54 as they bowled out an under-strength Australian side for just 140 runs at Optus Stadium.
Resting key players ahead of their upcoming Test series against India, Australia struggled from the outset. After a start of 20-0, they quickly collapsed to 88-6. Cooper Connolly had to retire hurt due to a suspected broken hand after Mohammad Hasnain struck him with a delivery. Sean Abbott top-scored with 30 while six Australian batsmen fell in single figures, showcasing a lackluster performance.
Captain Josh Inglis acknowledged the team’s struggles, saying, “Our whole batting line-up really didn’t get going at all throughout the series.” In reply, Pakistan’s openers, Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique built a solid 84-run partnership. Ayub scored 42 while Shafique added 37, setting the foundation for an easy chase. Captain Mohammad Rizwan contributed an unbeaten 30, guiding Pakistan home with 23.1 overs to spare.
Rizwan and star batter Babar Azam finished the chase comfortably, sealing a convincing 2-1 series victory. Shaheen Afridi emphasized the significance of this win, stating, “It was a great feeling for us as a country, as a nation – everyone is so excited.” Australia had narrowly won the first ODI by two wickets while Pakistan leveled the series in the second match with a decisive nine-wicket win.
The teams will now head to Brisbane for a three-match T20 series starting Thursday.
