Paul Collingwood Confident as England Pursues Historic Win

Paul Collingwood, England’s assistant coach believes that successfully chasing 297 runs to win the second Test in Pakistan would surpass their impressive victory in the first Test. The tourists set multiple records during their innings win in the first Test posting 823-7 declared, their highest total since 1938. However, England faces a daunting challenge as they ended day three of the second Test at 36-2 on a difficult pitch in Multan which has seen eight days of play.

Collingwood emphasized the team’s belief in overcoming the target, acknowledging the tough conditions while expressing confidence in finding ways to put pressure on Pakistan. If England completes the chase, it would mark their highest successful run chase in Asia and their joint third-highest chase in any overseas Test, making it a significant achievement. Despite conceding a first-innings deficit of 75 runs, England dismissed Pakistan for 221. However, dropped catches during the match proved costly.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and first-slip Joe Root both missed chances to dismiss Salman Agha, who went on to score 63 and build a crucial partnership for the ninth wicket with Sajid Khan. Paul Collingwood noted that Smith, who has made his share of mistakes, remains level-headed and composed a trait that benefits the team.  Pakistan’s Salman acknowledged that they are ahead in the match but are wary of England’s ability to seize momentum quickly.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining their good form and consistency, especially after taking two early wickets in England’s second innings. As the Test continues, both teams remain focused on the outcome with England aiming to achieve a historic chase.
