Sam Konstas Impresses on Debut with 60 on Day 1
Sam Konstas dazzled on his Australia debut, scoring a dynamic half-century on day one of the fourth Test against India in Melbourne. The 19-year-old opener, Australia’s youngest Test debutant since 1953, struck 60 off 65 balls including six fours and two sixes. Konstas clashed shoulders with Virat Kohli after the 10th over, leading to an exchange of words before Usman Khawaja and the umpires intervened. Konstas, undeterred by the confrontation, continued his aggressive innings, showing no fear against India’s bowlers including Jasprit Bumrah.
He even attempted a reverse ramp shot on just his 11th ball in Test cricket, thrilling the Melbourne crowd. After reaching his fifty, Jadeja dismissed him and he departed to a standing ovation. Usman Khawaja also found form, scoring 57 while Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Steve Smith (68) added valuable runs, helping Australia close the day at 311-6. However, India mounted a late comeback as Bumrah removed Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh in quick succession. Akash Deep claimed Alex Carey’s wicket, leaving Australia’s tail exposed.
The match took place under scorching conditions at the MCG with over 87,000 spectators in attendance for the traditional Boxing Day Test. The series is tied at 1-1 with both teams aiming to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final. Despite India’s frustrations, highlighted by Virat Kohli’s barge into Sam Konstas, Australia’s strong batting performance, particularly from Konstas and Khawaja, gave them an advantage. India’s bowlers, however, regrouped after lunch and took key wickets to stay in the contest.
