Sam Konstas, Australia’s 19-year-old opener made an impact in the fifth Test against India in Sydney. Teammate Scott Boland noted that Konstas got “under their skin.” The fiery conclusion to day one saw Konstas exchange words with India’s Jasprit Bumrah during the final over. India complained about Australia wasting time and Konstas responded, causing a tense confrontation that required the umpire to step in.

After Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja, he and his teammates celebrated near Konstas at the non-striker’s end. Boland praised Konstas for his flair and said that it was clear he got to the Indian players. He also added that Konstas should aim to make a big impact with the bat on day two. The drama occurred as Australia leading the series 2-1 had dismissed India for 185 and faced three overs before the close of play.

With the clock ticking, India suspected Khawaja of deliberately delaying to avoid extra overs which led to the heated exchange between Sam Konstas and Bumrah. India’s wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant confirmed the delay was intentional. After Bumrah dismissed Khawaja, he briefly faced Konstas while players like Prasidh Krishna and Virat Kohli celebrated near the teenager. Konstas had previously clashed with India during his debut in the fourth Test where he made 60 including an exchange with Kohli.

In Sydney, he continued his aggressive approach, charging Bumrah’s first delivery and attempting an audacious cut in the final over. While Konstas’ fiery attitude impressed many, former Australia coach Darren Lehmann cautioned him not to get caught up in the hype and urged him to focus on solid batting. His teammate, Beau Webster backed Konstas’ confidence, believing he had the talent to deliver big innings.
