Sri Lanka Crumble to Record-Low 42 in Durban Test
Sri Lanka recorded their lowest-ever Test total, bowled out for just 42 runs by South Africa on day two of the first Test in Durban. This dismal performance surpassed their previous low of 71 against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994 and stands as the eighth-lowest total in men’s Test cricket history.
In response to South Africa’s modest first innings score of 191, Sri Lanka collapsed within 13.5 overs, the second-shortest innings by balls faced (83) in men’s Test cricket. Kamindu Mendis (13) and Lahiru Kumara (10) were the only batters to reach double figures.
South Africa’s Marco Jansen starred with career-best figures of 7-13 from 6.5 overs, supported by Gerald Coetzee (2-18) and Kagiso Rabada (1-10). South Africa ended the day at 132-3 in their second innings leading by 281 runs and in a commanding position to push for victory.
The match is crucial for both teams’ hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Sri Lanka, currently third in the standings need to win both matches in this two-Test series and sweep their upcoming two-Test series against Australia to secure a spot in the final.
Three wins from their final four matches may also suffice. South Africa, ranked fifth, must win both games against Sri Lanka and sweep their series against Pakistan in December and January to guarantee their place. Three wins and a draw could also be enough for the Proteas.
With the pressure of the WTC on the line, Sri Lanka must rebound quickly in this series to keep their hopes alive while South Africa will look to capitalize on their dominant position to improve their standings.
