Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their spot in the Indian Premier League final with a commanding 36-run victory over Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 at Chennai. Heinrich Klaasen led the charge for Sunrisers Hyderabad with a blistering 34-ball half-century, propelling his team to a formidable total of 175-9. Supported by Travis Head (34) and Rahul Tripathi (37), Klaasen’s onslaught included four sixes, setting the tone for Sunrisers’ innings.
In response, Rajasthan Royals struggled to find momentum on a challenging pitch, despite Dhruv Jurel’s valiant 56* off 35 deliveries. Shahbaz Ahmed starred with the ball for Sunrisers, claiming an impressive 3-23 to stifle the Royals’ chase. Although Avesh Khan’s late burst restricted Sunrisers’ total, Trent Boult’s three crucial wickets including Aiden Markram, provided a glimmer of hope for the Royals.
However, the match turned decisively in Sunrisers’ favor during the second innings. Shahbaz’s pivotal dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal (42) and Riyan Parag (6) triggered a collapse, leaving the Royals reeling at 79-5. Despite Jurel’s resilient innings, Royals failed to recover, eventually posting 139-7.
Sunrisers’ victory sets up a final clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, scheduled for Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. While Knight Riders boast two IPL titles (2012 and 2014), Sunrisers have clinched the trophy once in 2016. Royals, missing the services of Jos Buttler, who joined the England squad for their T20 series against Pakistan, fell short in their bid to reach the final.
