Test cricket has not graced England’s schedule for 23 days during which the team has experienced significant changes. They have parted ways with their white-ball coach, lost an opener, fast bowler and captain to injuries, and mourned the death of Graham Thorpe. As a result, Surrey batter Ollie Pope will lead England in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Manchester’s Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Pope becomes the 82nd Test captain for England but Ben Stokes’ influence remains strong despite his injury. Stokes, known for his dynamic leadership, arrived at Old Trafford with a commanding presence, flanked by his team. England rarely changes its captain with only four men having led the team since 2009 while the UK has had seven prime ministers during the same period.

The last England captain to miss a match through injury was Michael Vaughan 17 years ago and only once before in 177 Tests has a full-time skipper missed a game due to personal reasons. Pope, who has been vice-captain for nearly two years, prepared for this role due to Stokes’ persistent knee issues. Ironically, Stokes now faces a hamstring injury, ending his streak of 32 consecutive Tests.

Despite having limited leadership experience, Pope has undertaken various roles such as captaining Surrey in the T20 Blast and participating in England’s selection meetings. While Stokes remains in the dressing room to support Pope, the team feels the absence of Stokes as captain deeply. England’s approach will likely stay the same with Pope gaining crucial experience.

England’s team selection includes Matthew Potts as a seamer, replacing Stokes and Dan Lawrence opening the batting in place of the injured Zak Crawley. This Test cricket against Sri Lanka provides Pope with the chance to prepare for future challenges including the potential absence of Stokes in upcoming tours.
