Muriel Furrer, the Swiss cyclist is in a “very critical” condition following a severe head injury sustained during the junior road race at the Road and Para-cycling World Championships in Zurich. The 18-year-old crashed under circumstances that are still under investigation, prompting authorities to express deep concern for her condition. Furrer, who previously won double silver medals in the time trial and road race at this year’s Swiss national championships was airlifted to the hospital after the accident.

The incident occurred amid torrential rain that impacted the day’s races. A joint statement from cycling’s governing body, the UCI, Swiss Cycling and the local organizing committee confirmed Furrer’s serious injuries and stated, “Extremely concerned by the situation, we are closely monitoring developments.” They emphasized that details surrounding the incident remain unclear and ongoing investigations will provide more information in due course.

This incident has reignited discussions about safety in road cycling which has seen a string of serious accidents in 2024. Notably, a crash during the Itzulia Basque Country race in April left three elite male riders injured including 2023 Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard. In light of such incidents, Sir Jim Ratcliffe owner of Britain’s Ineos Grenadiers urged the UCI for significant changes to enhance safety measures in road racing.

In response to the growing concerns, the UCI launched the SafeR campaign in 2023 to analyze risks and improve safety protocols in road cycling events. The tragic death of Muriel Furrer’s compatriot, Gino Mader in a high-speed crash during the Tour de Suisse last year has further underscored the urgency of addressing safety in the sport.
