Cyprien Sarrazin Recovering After Serious Crash in Bormio

Cyprien Sarrazin a 30-year-old French skier has left intensive care after he successfully underwent surgery to treat a brain bleed caused by a training crash in Bormio, Italy. Sarrazin crashed while preparing for the World Cup downhill on Friday. Medical staff airlifted him to the hospital where surgeons performed same-day surgery to reduce an intracranial hematoma. The French Ski Federation confirmed his condition has stabilized.

Doctors have moved Sarrazin to a general care unit, and further medical evaluations have reassured that he has no significant injuries beyond foot and knee pain. However, medical staff have not yet determined the duration of his recovery. Bormio’s slopes which will host the men’s alpine skiing events during the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, caused multiple injuries over the past week.

On the same day as Sarrazin’s crash, Italy’s Pietro Zazzi also fell, requiring airlifting and surgery. Swiss skier Josua Mettler sustained knee injuries in another incident. The crashes continued during Sunday’s World Cup Super-G event when Swiss skier Gino Caviezel suffered a serious fall, prompting his hospitalization. Bormio’s rugged slopes known for their challenging terrain, underscore the inherent risks of high-speed alpine skiing.

The men’s 2026 Olympic events will take place there while the women’s races are scheduled in Cortina d’Ampezzo, approximately five hours away by car. Cyprien Sarrazin continues to show progress and his stable condition provides hope for a full recovery. However, the string of accidents raises concerns about the safety of the demanding Bormio courses as skiers prepare for upcoming competitions.
