Luke Littler Upset in European Championship First Round
Luke Littler faced an unexpected defeat in the first round of the European Championship, losing 6-4 to Andrew Gilding in Dortmund. Gilding started strongly, taking a commanding 3-0 lead with impressive play including a 12-dart leg in the second game. However, Littler fought back, responding with three consecutive legs to level the match. Gilding regained his momentum with an 11-darter and despite Littler leveling the score once again, Gilding closed out the final two legs to secure his victory.
This win sets Gilding up for a second-round match against local favorite Ricardo Pietreczko on Saturday. “It’s the last thing I expected, especially with how Luke has played lately,” Gilding remarked, noting that this was the third time he had faced Littler, and finally, he emerged victorious. In contrast to Littler’s struggles, world champion Luke Humphries advanced effortlessly, defeating Nathan Aspinall 6-2. Humphries showcased his skill with seven 180s and a remarkable 46% checkout rate, demonstrating dominance throughout the match.
He will face Welshman Jonny Clayton, who secured his spot by beating Chris Dobey 6-4. Defending champion Peter Wright from Scotland exited the tournament early, enduring a disappointing 6-0 defeat to Jermaine Wattimena. Wright struggled throughout the match, averaging below 75 which ultimately led to his elimination from contention for a third European Championship title.
Wattimena will now meet England’s James Wade in the next round. The tournament continues to unfold with thrilling matchups and surprising results as players vie for the prestigious title.
