Michael van Gerwen, three-time world champion, defeated teenager Luke Littler 10-6 in the opening round of the World Matchplay in Blackpool. Van Gerwen, despite a somewhat inconsistent year, displayed flashes of brilliance, clinching the victory with a 101.93 average and a 43.5% checkout rate.
