Phil "The Power" Taylor Retires After Injury Setback

Phil “The Power” Taylor, hailed as darts’ greatest player has announced the end of his illustrious career after withdrawing from his final tournament due to a hip injury. The 16-time world champion, who has struggled with recovery since undergoing surgery this summer, cited pain that has rendered him unable to throw darts effectively. Taylor, 65, expressed his disappointment at missing the World Seniors Masters scheduled for November which would have marked his last competitive appearance.

He returned to competitive darts in 2022 after retiring in 2018 but has been hindered by complications from his hip injury, particularly scar tissue issues that have led to significant discomfort. “It’s been the worst pain I’ve ever had these last 12 months,” Taylor admitted in an interview, describing the pain as similar to toothache that intensifies after a few hours of practice.

Reflecting on his remarkable 35-year journey in darts, Taylor remained positive despite the setback. He acknowledged the joy he has found in performing and recognized that the time has come to step away from professional play. “I’m going to be working just as hard as I always have to make sure I give the fans what they want and go out on top,” he stated.

Throughout his career, Taylor achieved unprecedented success, winning 16 World Championships, starting with his first BDO World Championship in 1990 and claiming his last PDC title in 2013 against Michael van Gerwen. He also reached 21 world championship finals, secured six Premier League titles and led England to four World Cup victories, amassing a total of 214 professional titles and a record 85 major championships.

As he concludes this chapter, Phil “The Power” Taylor leaves behind a legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
