Ayaka Furue Claims Evian Championship with Dramatic Finish

Ayaka Furue of Japan secured her maiden major victory at the Evian Championship in France, thanks to a stunning final-hole eagle, thereby, capping off a remarkable late surge. Initially, she started the day one shot behind Stephanie Kyriacou of Australia and, surprisingly, found herself three strokes behind with five holes remaining. However, a determined Furue staged a comeback with a flurry of birdies from the 14th hole onwards, dramatically propelling her into a three-way tie for the lead heading into the final hole. After that, Furue then hit the green in two shots and brilliantly sank a crucial eagle putt to clinically clinch the championship.

Furthermore, her final round score of six-under-par 65 brought her to a total of 19 under par, narrowly edging out Kyriacou by a single stroke and finishing two strokes ahead of Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit, who shot an impressive 63 on the day. On the other hand, American Lauren Coughlin, who led alongside Kyriacou and Furue going into the back nine, unfortunately faltered with bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes, ultimately settling for fourth place. Basking in her victory, Furue expressed her elation, describing the moment as “breathtaking” and “incredible.”

Ayaka Furue, at only 24 years old, becomes Japan’s third women’s major champion, following Shibuno and Higuchi. Her victory at the Evian Championship is a significant accomplishment in her budding career. In other results, Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh and England’s Georgia Hall finished tied for 17th place at seven under par. Dryburgh closed with a final round of 71, while Hall finished with a 70.
