Bernhard Langer capped off the season with a thrilling victory at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, shooting a remarkable five-under-par 66 to finish at 18 under par. The 67-year-old, who surpassed his age by a stroke secured a one-shot win over defending champion Steven Alker and Richard Green marking his 47th career title on the PGA Tour Champions. This win extended Langer’s incredible record of claiming at least one title every year for the past 18 years on the over-50s circuit.
Langer’s win at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona was especially meaningful, coming after a challenging season in which he tore his Achilles tendon earlier in 2024. Reflecting on the victory, Langer expressed gratitude, calling it “unbelievable” to win such a significant event after his recent struggles and lauding his 18-year streak as “amazing.” Heading into the back nine, Langer held a five-stroke lead but his position became precarious after bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes.
Another bogey on the 17th allowed Alker to catch up, setting up a dramatic final hole. Despite driving into the trees on the 18th, Langer managed a birdie with a 30-foot putt, while Alker only made par sealing Langer’s one-shot victory. Though he narrowly missed out on the championship win, 53-year-old Alker’s second-place finish was enough to secure the season-long Charles Schwab Cup, overtaking Ernie Els in the points standings.
“It would have been nice to win it all, but I’ve got the Schwab Cup and that’s important to me,” Alker remarked, emphasizing his satisfaction with the season’s outcome. With this latest win, Bernhard Langer has further cemented his legacy on the Champions Tour continuing to showcase skill, resilience and a level of consistency rare in professional golf.
