Hideki Matsuyama Wins FedEx St. Jude Championship

Hideki Matsuyama overcame a dramatic mid-round collapse to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Tennessee, securing his victory despite relinquishing a five-shot lead. Matsuyama, who won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, began the final round with a comfortable lead but faced a challenging stretch where he lost four shots over four holes.

This included a frustrating tee shot into water on the 14th hole, which allowed Norway’s Viktor Hovland to overtake him. Despite the setback, Matsuyama found his form again on the 17th hole, sinking a crucial 26-foot putt to regain the lead. His strong finish continued with an impressive second shot on the par-four 18th, setting up a birdie putt that sealed his victory by two strokes. This win marks the opening leg of the PGA Tour’s season-ending play-offs.

Hideki Matsuyama, 32, played at TPC Southwind without his regular caddie after his team faced a robbery in London following the Olympics. The championship’s second place was shared by Norway’s Hovland and American world number two Xander Schauffele, both finishing at 15 under par. The American world number one, Scottie Scheffler, placed fourth at 14 under par.

The event, featuring the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings, set the stage for the next round at the BMW Championship in Colorado, where the top 50 will advance. These top 50 players will also qualify for all eight PGA Tour signature events in 2025, adding further significance to their performance in the play-offs.
