Jon Rahm starting his competitive year at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic is embracing the changing golfing landscape. The former Masters champion is no stranger to early-season success, particularly on the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing where he secured nearly half of his 11 career victories. However, his move to the breakaway LIV Tour in late 2023 shifted his focus as he can now participate in European tour events.
Rahm reflects on his decision to join LIV, explaining that it “opened up his January,” freeing him from the hectic schedule of the PGA Tour’s early months. Despite some media speculation about his potential regret after joining LIV for a reported $450 million, Rahm insists he is content with his choice. He also attributes some of his struggles early last year to personal challenges, notably his wife’s difficult pregnancy which he says affected both his mental state and performance on the course.
Rahm has enjoyed success with LIV including becoming its 2024 individual champion. He emphasized that while team victories matter most to him, his first win at the LIV British event was particularly relieving. He also believes LIV has enhanced golf’s appeal, citing how skeptics often change their views after attending an event.
Looking ahead, Jon Rahm is focused on his fourth Ryder Cup in September where he hopes to contribute to a historic away win. He remains hopeful for a resolution between LIV and traditional golf tours, believing the sport is entering a golden era. With the PGA, DP World and LIV tours along with new initiatives like the TGL, Rahm sees endless possibilities to elevate golf globally.
