Julien Guerrier the French golfer finally clinched his first DP World Tour title by defeating Spain’s Jorge Campillo in a thrilling record-equalling nine-hole playoff at the Andalucia Masters. The 39-year-old secured victory by holing a critical eight-foot putt on his 230th tournament start, marking a significant milestone in his career. In a remarkable twist of fate, Guerrier’s coach, Raphael Jacquelin also won a nine-hole playoff at the Spanish Open in 2013.

The only other European Tour event decided by a nine-hole playoff occurred at the 1989 Dutch Open which Jose Maria Olazabal won. Throughout the final day, the lead fluctuated between Guerrier and Campillo creating a tense atmosphere. However, Campillo’s bogey on the 18th hole allowed Guerrier to sink a 16-foot par putt, forcing the playoff.

In the playoff, Campillo had a chance to secure the win on several occasions but failed to capitalize, missing par putts from six, ten and fifteen feet on the third, seventh and eighth extra holes. As the playoff extended into the ninth hole, Guerrier made par while Campillo struggled to recover from a greenside bunker, ultimately sealing Guerrier’s victory.

“I’m feeling great and I can’t believe I made it,” Julien Guerrier exclaimed after his win. “It’s been a really long time coming, and we work hard every week for this, but patience is key.” He acknowledged Campillo’s talent, stating, “I know Jorge Campillo is a great player but today it went my way, so I’m very happy.” This triumph not only marks a significant personal achievement for Guerrier but also adds a new chapter to his professional golfing journey.
