Justin Rose (captain) has downplayed speculation surrounding Tom McKibbin’s future as Great Britain and Ireland prepare for this week’s Team Cup in Abu Dhabi. Reports suggest the Northern Irishman may join LIV Golf, just two months after earning his first PGA Tour card, and potentially link up with Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team. McKibbin declined to comment on the matter and Rose emphasized that the team remains focused on the event.

“We’re all aware of the speculation. It hasn’t been confirmed or denied to me,” Rose told BBC’s Iain Carter. “This week, the team room is all about us being here for this event.” Rose noted that players have grown accustomed to the ongoing LIV Golf narrative since its inception in 2022, adding, “It’s part of the current golf landscape and we’re focusing on getting our seasons off to a strong start.” Rose is both playing captain and leader of his team against Francesco Molinari’s European side in this Ryder Cup-style event.

At 44, he is targeting a return to consistency in 2025 as he aims to secure a spot in his seventh Ryder Cup. The 2013 US Open champion was a wildcard pick for Europe’s victory over the United States in 2023 and is eager to earn a place in the 2025 contest in New York. Despite not winning a tournament in 2024, Rose achieved a notable joint runner-up finish at The Open Championship, signaling he can still compete at the highest level.

“I’m more motivated than ever,” Justin Rose said. “Last year showed I still have what it takes but I need to be more consistent and make personal changes to step it up this season.” The Team Cup begins on Friday, marking an exciting start to the new golfing year.
