Peter Baker Defends Title in Dramatic Playoff Win
Peter Baker won the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius at Constance Belle Mare Plage defeating Simon Griffiths on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff. Both players finished the regular tournament tied at 16 under par, three shots ahead of the field after birdying the final two holes. In the playoff, they matched birdies on the first two attempts at the par-five 18th before Baker won with a four after getting up and down from a greenside bunker.
Baker, who had considered withdrawing from the tournament due to illness successfully defended the title he won the previous year. However, his victory was not enough to retain the John Jacobs Trophy which went to Brazilian Adilson da Silva, who clinched the Order of Merit. Griffiths received the Barry Lane Rookie of the Year award as consolation. Earlier, Peter Baker had a mixed round, carding a 35 on the front nine before picking up a shot on the 10th hole.
He made pars until reaching the 17th where he moved to 15 under and then narrowly missed an eagle putt on the 18th. Griffiths had a strong start with four birdies on the front nine and added two more on the back to finish tied with Baker. Colin Montgomerie, the 2017 champion at Belle Mare Plage struggled in the final round, starting with a double bogey and failing to recover.
South Africa’s Keith Horne surged with four birdies on the front nine but faltered with a double bogey on the 12th. Meanwhile, Da Silva clinched the John Jacobs Trophy with consistent play, posting a final-round 69 to finish tied for seventh.
