Rory McIlroy Backs LIV's New Leadership, Talks Tour’s Future

Rory McIlroy believes Greg Norman’s departure as CEO of LIV Golf is a “good move” for the Saudi-backed tour which McIlroy sees as likely remaining in play for the foreseeable future. LIV Golf appointed Scott O’Neil, a seasoned sports executive, as Norman’s successor. McIlroy praised O’Neil’s “amazing track record” and his extensive experience managing teams like the Philadelphia 76ers NBA franchise.
Norman played a central role in the split between professional golf’s top players with many joining LIV Golf, sparking controversy. While McIlroy had previously criticized Norman and the breakaway circuit, he has softened his stance. Reflecting on Norman’s tenure, Rory McIlroy acknowledged Norman’s pivotal role in launching LIV Golf but stated that it’s time for someone with more experience to lead the organization moving forward.
McIlroy, currently competing in the Dubai Desert Classic, said, “It doesn’t look like they are going away any time soon.” McIlroy highlighted O’Neil’s credentials, noting they make him well-suited to lead LIV Golf, especially given his experience in sports management. The PGA Tour continues to negotiate with LIV’s backers, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), over a potential resolution to the ongoing division.
McIlroy, who carded an opening round of 70 in Dubai, called it “scrappy” but recovered with crucial up-and-down shots. He also fulfilled a personal goal by attending a Borussia Dortmund match. Meanwhile, McIlroy’s protégé, Tom McKibbin is linked to a move to LIV Golf and shared the same 70 score as McIlroy in Dubai’s opening round. Other notable performances include Jon Rahm, who carded 69 and several others who remain in contention after strong rounds.
