Rory McIlroy Reflects on Near Misses in 2024 Season

Rory McIlroy a seasoned golfer with 40 career victories faces a puzzling question: what does it take to win a tournament? Despite his accolades, he has recently finished as runner-up twice in two weeks including last week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and the Irish Open both of which attracted enthusiastic crowds. In 2024, McIlroy has experienced several disappointing results including defeats by Tommy Fleetwood in the Dubai Invitational and a frustrating finish at the US Open.

Although he has secured three wins this season, they do not come in the prestigious tournaments he most desires to conquer. McIlroy consistently places himself in contention, showcasing his relentless excellence but his recent performances have left a bittersweet taste. In the final round at Wentworth, McIlroy shot a commendable 67 and finished at 20 under par, demonstrating his skill and tenacity.

A highlight was his remarkable 46-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole which positioned him to win. However, with the tournament on the line at the 18th hole, McIlroy faltered under pressure hitting a short and left four-iron shot that resulted in a par. In the playoff, despite making two impressive birdies, he lost to Billy Horschel, who clinched victory with a long eagle putt.

Reflecting on his disappointments, Rory McIlroy acknowledged the weight of expectation but remains confident in his abilities, saying, “I feel like I’ve really got a knack for playing good enough golf.” As the current world number three and leading contender for the Race to Dubai title, McIlroy is determined to turn close calls into victories emphasizing that he has become a better golfer than he was five years ago.
