Rory McIlroy Surprised by Bradley’s Ryder Cup Captaincy

Rory McIlroy has expressed surprise at Keegan Bradley’s appointment as United States captain for the Ryder Cup, following Tiger Woods declining the role. McIlroy, alongside Ryder Cup teammates, learned of Bradley’s selection from Europe skipper Luke Donald during a recent dinner. McIlroy described the reaction among them as one of disbelief, noting Bradley’s familiarity with Bethpage Black and his passion for the Ryder Cup.

At 38, Bradley becomes the youngest captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963 to balance playing with leadership. Despite narrowly missing automatic selection for the US team in Rome, Bradley was not chosen as a captain’s pick by Zach Johnson, resulting in a 16½-11½ defeat to Europe. Currently ranked 19th globally, Bradley intends to qualify for the team, but McIlroy believes this would necessitate relinquishing the captaincy.

McIlroy, reflecting on his own considerations for future Ryder Cups emphasized the challenges of being both player and captain, citing the extensive preparation required and the demands of the role. He asserted that to excel as a captain or a player, one must focus solely on either role due to the Ryder Cup’s magnitude and the responsibilities involved.

Looking ahead, Rory McIlroy speculated that if Bradley qualifies as a player, he would likely need to pass the captaincy to a vice-captain. The announcement of Bradley’s captaincy marks a departure from recent US strategies, and McIlroy suggested time would reveal the wisdom of this decision for the team.
