Rose Zhang was unfortunately diagnosed with an illness, leading her to withdraw from the Mizuho Americas Open after playing only three holes in the opening round. This was disappointing news for everyone involved, especially considering that Zhang was defending her title after winning her first pro start at the same event a year ago. Several players including Masson, Stark, Katsu, Jeon and Creamer withdrew due to illness while Yin, Weaver-Wright and A Lim Kim withdrew due to injury.

The exact nature of the illness was not specified but Rose Zhang mentioned “bad intestinal pain” in her statement on Instagram. The LPGA stated that medical professionals on site had treated several athletes for symptoms related to a viral infection. They are closely monitoring the situation and working with tournament organizers to provide necessary precautions to the athletes.

However, there was some positive news amidst the withdrawals. With Masson and Stark out, LPGA rookies Mao Saigo and So Mi Lee got the opportunity to play as alternates. Saigo and Lee excelled in the first round with Saigo shooting a four-under 68, tying for second and Lee leading with an impressive six-under 66.

Neither Saigo nor Lee expected to play that day but they seized the opportunity. Saigo had planned to go to the park for a run while Lee had already sent her caddie home. However, Lee’s father stepped in to carry her bag for the first round. Both alternates continued their strong play in the second round with Saigo finishing tied for third and Lee in second place, setting up an exciting third round on Saturday.

Overall, while the illness-related withdrawals were unfortunate, it created an unexpected opportunity for Saigo and Lee to showcase their skills and make an impact in the tournament.
