Scottie Scheffler has withdrawn from next week’s PGA Tour event in California to continue recovering from a hand injury he sustained while preparing Christmas dinner. The world number one announced on Instagram that he will skip The American Express tournament in La Quinta from January 16-18 to give his injury more time to heal. The 28-year-old American golfer suffered a puncture wound to his right hand from broken glass over the festive period, requiring surgery on his palm.
As a result, Scheffler missed the opening event of the PGA Tour season, The Sentry, and will also sit out this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii. Scheffler, who had a remarkable 2023 season, winning nine titles including the Masters and a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics is now targeting a return at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, set to begin on January 30. The injury has forced the world number one to put his competitive schedule on hold, but Scheffler remains hopeful for a swift recovery.
He has been proactive in managing the healing process to ensure his return to form for the remainder of the season. The PGA Tour season is still in its early stages and while Scottie Scheffler’s absence is a setback, his history of success and commitment to recovery suggests he will be back to full fitness soon. As he takes the time necessary to heal his hand, his fans and the golfing world will eagerly await his return to competition at Pebble Beach later this month.
