Suzann Pettersen Stands Firm Despite Solheim Cup Defeat

Suzann Pettersen has no regrets despite Europe’s 15½-12½ loss to the United States in the Solheim Cup, ending their five-year reign as champions. Europe trailing 6-2 after the first day, mounted a strong comeback to win Sunday’s singles 6½-5½ and nearly reached the 14 points needed for a fourth consecutive title. However, Pettersen faced criticism for her decision to bench Ireland’s Leona Maguire, who had been a standout in previous tournaments.

Pettersen defended her choices, stating, “I’ve never lived my life regretting any decisions.” She acknowledged the difficulty of pairings in a 12-woman team and admitted that different selections might have altered the outcome. Despite Maguire’s strong performance in practice and a solid singles win against Ally Ewing, Pettersen’s decision to rest her in several sessions became a point of contention.

Maguire, who had won seven and a half points in previous Solheim Cups expressed frustration over her limited play. She felt she performed well in practice and was disappointed not to be utilized more, although she managed a decisive 4&3 win in her final match. Pettersen serving her second term as captain, did not confirm whether she would lead the team again in 2026.

She emphasized that the European players would return with equal determination, noting the close nature of the competition despite the final score. Suzann Pettersen attributed the loss to a poor start and a lack of putts, along with the inherent challenges of always playing catch-up. As the Americans were eager after their win in Spain, Pettersen is confident that Europe will match that hunger in two years.
