Tom McKibbin has officially joined LIV Golf, making a lucrative move to the Saudi-backed circuit. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland had been rumored to make the switch since early January but avoided discussing the speculation at recent events. His decision means he will forgo the PGA Tour card he earned in November, despite advice from mentor Rory McIlroy, who discouraged the move.

McKibbin, currently ranked 106th in the world joins Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team which also includes Tyrrell Hatton. The LIV Golf season begins in Riyadh on February 6. However, since LIV events do not award world ranking points, McKibbin risks falling further down the rankings. He will also be ineligible for the PGA Tour and will likely make only occasional appearances on the DP World Tour.

The PGA Tour continues negotiations with LIV’s backers, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) in hopes of reconciling the sport’s ongoing divide. McKibbin may be banking on a resolution that could expand his playing opportunities beyond the breakaway tour. His move could impact his Ryder Cup aspirations. Although he was part of the Great Britain & Ireland team at the Hero Cup, crucial for Ryder Cup selection, playing LIV events could make it difficult for him to earn a spot in Team Europe.

His decision follows that of fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, who is already part of LIV. McIlroy, who has mentored Tom McKibbin expressed disappointment over the move, believing it sacrifices opportunities to compete against the best. However, he stated he would continue to support McKibbin. Despite potential drawbacks, McKibbin has already secured a spot at the 2025 Open at Royal Portrush. His career now hinges on how he navigates LIV Golf’s controversial landscape.
