Il Est Francais, the flamboyant chaser who dazzled at Kempton Park last year is set to make a much-anticipated return in the Ladbrokes-sponsored Kauto Star Novices’ Chase on Boxing Day. Known for his spectacular jumping and electrifying pace, the French-trained horse stole the show in 2023 with a performance that surpassed even the prestigious King George VI Chase in excitement, completing the three-mile course five seconds faster than Hewick, that year’s King George champion.

However, the year since has been challenging. Trained in Chantilly by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm, Il Est Francais has faced setbacks including a pulled-up effort in the Prix Haye Jousselin, a key French race. Vets diagnosed a burst blood vessel, a recurring issue for him at Auteuil. Despite these hurdles, George reports the horse is now in peak form, crediting his staff’s meticulous care and preparation.

This year, hopes are high for a repeat of Il Est Francais’ 2023 brilliance. Known for his exuberant style and love for Kempton’s good ground, the plan is to let him find his rhythm and dominate with his signature jumping ability. “If he performs as he did last year, he’ll be very hard to beat,” George confidently stated. The competition is fierce with contenders like Grey Dawning, trained by Dan Skelton and Paul Nicholls’ Bravemansgame, the 2022 King George victor.

Spillane’s Tower, representing JP McManus, also poses a serious threat after an impressive return at Punchestown. As the connections of Il Est Francais anticipate fireworks once again, fans are bracing for a thrilling showdown. If this star chaser recaptures his form, Boxing Day promises another unforgettable chapter in his remarkable journey.
