Lindsey Vonn Returns to World Cup with Strong 14th Place Finish
Lindsey Vonn marked her return to World Cup skiing after more than five years away with a strong 14th-place finish in the Super G at St. Moritz. The 40-year-old retired in February 2019 but made a successful comeback in November following knee surgery. Aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, Vonn crossed the line in 1:16.36 just 1.18 seconds behind Austria’s Cornelia Hutter, the winner.
Vonn expressed her excitement after the race, saying she felt great and still had more to give. “I really wanted to get to the finish today and be solid. I didn’t want to risk too much,” she explained, adding, “It feels so good to have the nerves, to have the butterflies, to have the adrenaline, and to push yourself.” She described her return as the perfect start and looked forward to improving with each race.
Earlier this month, Vonn made her return to competition in Copper Mountain, Colorado where she finished 24th and 27th in two downhill races at the FIS Fall Festival. A standout in skiing, Vonn’s illustrious career includes Olympic medals with gold in the downhill and bronze in Super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
She also earned a bronze in the downhill at Pyeongchang 2018. Over her career, Lindsey Vonn has won 20 World Cup titles including four overall Crystal Globes and 82 World Cup victories. After her strong showing in St. Moritz, she will race again on Sunday in another Super G event continuing her journey toward the 2026 Olympics.
