Andy Murray and Dan Evans Reach Quarter-Finals at Paris 2024

Andy Murray extended his retirement roadshow at Paris 2024 with an epic win alongside Dan Evans, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Olympic men’s doubles. Murray, 37, plans to retire after the Games but isn’t ready to stop yet. The duo defeated Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 11-9 securing victory on their third match point after surviving two from their opponents. An emotional Murray, who shed tears post-match, expressed his overwhelming happiness.

Next, they could face American third seeds Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, pending their second-round match against the Dutch pair Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojen. Murray and Evans will rest before returning to action on Thursday. Reflecting on their performance, Murray said, “It was another amazing finish, so it takes a lot out of you. I’m glad we get a day off tomorrow.”

In other matches, Spanish pair Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal also reached the last eight, defeating the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof 6-4, 6-7, 10-2. Nadal praised the experience of playing with Alcaraz, calling it a “special moment.”

Andy Murray and Dan Evans, known for their resilience continue to defy the odds. Earlier, they saved five match points to beat Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori. Despite sweltering conditions, they secured an early break against the Belgians and won the first set. Although they faded slightly in the second set, they faced no break points leading to a dramatic match tie-break.

Murray, who recently had back surgery is still dealing with fitness concerns while Evans has faced knee issues. Their journey to the quarter-finals feels remarkable, given their physical challenges. Murray remains cautious yet hopeful, acknowledging the fine margins in doubles play but believing they have a chance to reach the semi-finals.
