Armand Duplantis Wins BBC World Sport Star 2024
Armand Duplantis the Swedish pole vaulter has claimed BBC Sports Personality’s World Sport Star of the Year for 2024 after a phenomenal record-breaking season. Widely regarded as the greatest pole vaulter in history, the 25-year-old further solidified his legacy by defending his Olympic title, becoming the first man since the 1950s to claim consecutive pole vault golds at the Games. Duplantis set three world records in 2024, continually pushing the limits of his sport.
He vaulted 6.24m in April at the Diamond League in Xiamen, China then broke his own record again at the Paris Olympics with a leap of 6.25m, setting new Olympic and world records. In August, he raised the bar even higher, clearing 6.26m at the Diamond League in Silesia, Poland. Alongside his record-breaking feats, Duplantis dominated the sport by winning a second world indoor title and a third European gold in 2024. At the Paris Olympics, he delivered a commanding performance, finishing 30cm ahead of silver medalist Sam Kendricks.
Accepting the honor, Armand Duplantis said, “I am so honored to win the World Sports Personality of the Year award. This really means a lot to me.” Although he couldn’t attend the ceremony, he expressed gratitude and emphasized his focus on training for the upcoming season. The public vote decided the award with Duplantis beating a star-studded shortlist that included Simone Biles, Caitlin Clark, Catherine Debrunner, Sifan Hassan and Léon Marchand.
He follows Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland, who won in 2023 as the second consecutive Scandinavian recipient. Duplantis’s extraordinary achievements in 2024 highlight his status as a generational talent and one of the most dominant athletes in the world.
