Carl Hester Reacts to Dujardin’s Video Scandal

Carl Hester, Team GB dressage rider expressed his shock and disappointment over a video showing Charlotte Dujardin whipping a horse excessively. Consequently, Dujardin, a long-time teammate of Hester and Britain’s joint-most decorated female Olympian, withdrew from the Olympic Games on July 23 after the video surfaced, revealing her mistreating a horse during a training session.

Hester, who was a mentor to Dujardin and a board member of the International Dressage Riders Club, signed a letter condemning her actions. He stated that the video was a huge shock to him, as he did not know it existed and confirmed that it was not from his property. Given his 17-year relationship with Dujardin, Hester acknowledged the situation as particularly challenging, considering her personal life and the severe consequences she has faced.

He added, “She has paid very heavily for this in a way that you wouldn’t believe.” Meanwhile, Dujardin, who has been provisionally suspended by the FEI, admitted that the incident was “completely out of character” and expressed deep regret, asserting that it did not reflect her usual training practices. Carl Hester, who hired Dujardin at his yard in 2007, described her as someone who has made a significant mistake but also noted that people deserve forgiveness.

While the video remains unacceptable, Hester emphasized that his long-term view of Dujardin remains positive. As the dressage competition progresses, Hester, Becky Moody and Charlotte Fry have begun their bids. Notably, Moody, who replaced Dujardin, qualified for the individual final with a score of 74.938%. In contrast, Hester, having finished third in his group with a score of 77.345%, is awaiting confirmation for his final placement.
