French Authorities Foil Plot to Attack Olympic Stadium

French officials have arrested an 18-year-old man in southern France for plotting an attack on a football stadium designated for use during this summer’s Olympic Games. They apprehended the individual, of Chechen origin, in Saint-Etienne on May 22 after discovering evidence suggesting plans for an Islamist-inspired attack. The suspect allegedly had photographs and videos of the stadium on his phone and computer, and authorities believe he intended to target spectators and security forces at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, the city’s primary venue for football matches. Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin praised the intelligence services for foiling the initial plot aimed at the Olympic Games, scheduled to begin on July 26.

The Paris Olympics organizing committee also commended French authorities for their “efficiency” in addressing the threat. In anticipation of the Games, the French government has deployed approximately 20,000 soldiers and over 40,000 police officers for security. Additionally, around 2,000 troops and police officers from other nations will provide support. Security services have screened one million individuals associated with the Games including athletes, local residents, medical personnel and volunteers. France, having endured numerous Islamist attacks in recent years, remains vigilant in protecting against potential threats.
