Great Britain celebrated their first two gold medals of the Paris Olympics on day three, amid a flurry of successes. Team GB secured six medals across various sports including swimming, equestrian, mountain biking, canoe slalom, and diving. The day’s first gold came from the equestrian team, who defended their title from the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games.

Tom Pidcock clinched a dramatic victory in men’s mountain biking despite a puncture that dropped him to ninth place. He staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming France’s Victor Koretzky to secure the gold medal. In canoe slalom, Adam Burgess earned silver in the men’s singles while Tom Daley won his fifth Olympic medal, securing silver in the synchronised 10m platform with partner Noah Williams.

Daley, competing in his fifth Games, is likely to retire from individual events but his performance added to his collection of medals. The British swimming team saw mixed results. Matt Richards finished a heart-wrenching second in the men’s 200m freestyle just 0.02 seconds behind winner David Popovici. Earlier, Adam Peaty tested positive for COVID-19 which raised concerns about his future participation.

Duncan Scott and Freya Colbert also faced disappointment, finishing fourth in their respective events. In canoe slalom, Burgess performed well but French competitor Nicolas Gestin’s flawless run secured gold. Meanwhile, British swimming great Adam Peaty’s positive COVID test cast a shadow over the team’s achievements. Great Britain faced setbacks in men’s team gymnastics, finishing fourth. They also lost 17-7 to the USA in women’s rugby sevens.

The boxing team’s struggles continued with Delicious Orie’s loss in the +92kg category, marking four defeats for British boxers so far. Despite these setbacks, the day’s performances highlighted Team GB’s continued strong showing at the Olympics.
